Day Zero: Container arrives in Colombo

Container arrives in Balapitiya at HFH Work Center

The Container arrived in Colombo and was cleared through Customs under Import Duty Waiver for Tsunami Reconstruction. The container is sent Balapitiya was unloaded into the HFH Work Center. Executive Director, Tony Senewiratne inspected $2,500 Mortar Mixer donated by Stone Equipment.

Day One: Foundation prepared and the first steel panel was made in Sri Lanka

Habitat Volunteers and local Sri Lankans loaded up the truck to take Building Materials to the Project Site. A Sri Lankan mason prepared the foundation as per local custom. The first Light Gauge Steel Wall Panels made in Sri Lanka.

Donald Stevens, Tsunami REACH, instructed local Sri Lankans on US Building Techniques for Wall Panel Fabrication. Chaminda learned to use a Grabber Screw Gun and the proper installation of components. Chaminda & Shamira fastened components together at the project site. “These two are quick learners.”

First Wall (Rear) was erected in Sri Lanka The Second Wall (Right Side) was raised later that same day. Donald Stevens, Tsunami REACH, stands with Nimal (Home Owner) after several walls were erected. "That smile never goes away."

The Gable wall (front) is installed under the watch of Habitat for Humanity Directors. A group photo is taken at the end of the day.

Day Five: A Sri Lankan mason and carpenter do their work

A Sri Lankan Mason placed concrete on the inside of the exterior wall panel burying it permanently. Silva, a Sri Lankan carpenter, attaches collar ties on the top of an exterior wall panel. The roof panel and collar tie connects to the exterior wall. An end of Day Five group photo is taken.

Day Six: Roof Panel are placed

Norm (HFH Volunteer from Canada) lends a helping hand to prep Roof Panel #7.
Later in the day Donald & Norm up on the Roof installing Roof Panel #5. Lara (HFH Volunteer from USA) places rubble fill inside the home prepping the base for concrete. Chamars places the concrete slab, burying Exterior Wall Panel #1.

Day Seven: Concrete Slab Work

End of Day 7
A Sri Lankan Mason places the concrete floor slab burying the exterior walls in 12” of concrete. Base Concrete Slab is placed and cures. Nuwan,( HFH Project Coordinator) places a window and door order with a local carpenter as Nimal (Home Owner, Right) looks on. Day seven ends with the framing and floor slab complete. Exterior wall panels are buried in 12 in. of concrete.
