Founder Assesses Homes 2 Years After Tsunami

February 5, 2008 ~ Tsunami REACH Founder, Donald Stevens, successfully returns from Sri Lanka where he was able to assess homes which we built 2 years ago.

Mr. Stevens was able to meet with homeowners and asked them how the houses were performing and if there were any postive and/or negative issues to report. Homeowners comments were overwhelmingly positive and all of them believed that these were the best built houses built due to the manner in which they were constructed.

N.A. Nimal stated, "my house is remarkable cooler than the ones built by Habitat For Humanity, the Red Cross, and the others. They used that special reflective foil on the outside of the walls under their special stucco and roof tiles, which really keeps the heat out."

Samantha stated, "This is the best built house in the village. Many of my neighbors houses already have cracks in the cement block walls and their roofs are sagging because they used inferior timber. My wife and two children love our home and we are so thankful to your organization and America."

Tsunami REACH Founder Creates Another Effort to Aid Children

April 2008 ~ Under the support and guidance of another Board of Directors a new mission to aid children affected not only by natural disaster but also civil war and poverty throughout the world has been initiated. REACH, which stands for Reconstruction Efforts Aiding Children without Homes will focus on bringing sustainable and environmentally friendly building solutions to beneficiaries around the world..

REACH has agreed to assist BETHANIA KIDS in the construction of their first Children Center in Rajahmundry, India. The project is currently being designed by the Washington, D.C. chapter of ARCHITECTURE for HUMANITY.

The new center will include housing for 50 orphans, kitchen/eating area, a library, bath/shower hall, community center and a playground all of which is to be built using the STUCC ON STEEL Building System. STUCC ON STEEL's buildings are environmentally friendly and are highly resistant to earthquake, fire, termite, mold and flooding.

Costs associated with the construction of the project is estimated at $150,000. The project has been divided into three stages with groundbreaking estimated to occur in November 2008.

If you are interested in participating in the construction of this center from November 2008 to March 2009 then check out our VOLUNTOUR Program. Participants will have the opportunity to work along side local workers in the construction of the orphanage. They will also get a chance to interact with the kids and sightsee special places in the country. December-2005:The first 511 square foot home of its kind (light gauge steel framing system with high-strength structural stucco coatings) was built using unskilled and skilled labor. No wood or asbestos was used to create the structural frame. The estimated life expectancy of the structure, under basic care & maintenance is 125 years.

Why your donation is important!

Since this technology uses NO wood or timber products, indirectly your donation will be used to protect the rain forest & endangered wildlife!

January 5, 2006: A Panelized Light Gauge Galvanized Steel Roof Framing System for Tsunami Reconstruction can be used instead of wood taken from the rain forest. “100% of the wood typically required to construct the roof structure can now be eliminated.” says Donald Stevens, Founder and Executive Director. 4/21/06 - Return from Sri Lanka
Read the April 2006 article from the Winchester Star.

Trip #4 Completed - During Trip#4 we met up with both homeowners and their families in Balapitiya to assess how they are enjoying their new homes. Success! 16 months after the Tsunami and approximately 9% of the homes have been built.

Unbelievably, things are worse in Batticaloa, which is on the East side of the island. I visited a tsunami refugee camp with the Field Coordinator from United Nations OCHA that contained 1,220 shelters. Living conditions are incomprehensible with NO relief in site as NGO's continue to deal with skilled labor and building material shortages, price increases and the complexity of large scale housing projects.
